TRADE WITH MANCHESTER.
Melbourne, September 5,
Mr Hotson, interviewed regarding his visit to England bo open a direct brade with Manchester, said that tbe London middlemen have for years conducted a .system of financing the Australian importers of Manchester goods which will enable them to keep control of that brade until such times as similar terms can be devised in Manchester. Reciprocity in bhe way of direcb return cargoes is therefore ab firsb to be precluded to a considerable extent, bub a strong local feeling is in favour of establishing the aystem. Mancheater compares very favourably with London as a distributing centre, and would serve from six to eighb millions of people, moatly earning good wages. In all quarters bhe people concurred as bo the splendid possibility of fostering a direct trade'with Australia, especially in meat and wool.
