NEWMARKET COUNCIL.
The usual meobing of the Newarkeb Council was held lasc nighb, Mr F. G. Clayton (Mayor) occupying bhe chair. Messrs Spooner, Angus, Lumpkin and Hogg wero present. Messrs Besketh and Richmond, on behalf of Messrs Soccombe and Son, wrote informing the Council that the Newmarket Hotel had been enlarged by the addition of a billiard room, made by taking in the detached building. The Mayor said a by-law had been passed to charge a license fee for this billiard room, bub now tbab bhe room has been made part of the hotel, it would be under the control of the Licensing Corumitbee and the police, instead of tbe Council.—The letter whs received.—Major Pirie, Returning Officer, notified tbe election unopposed of Messrs W. Edgerley, C. G. Laurie, and E. Low, to seats on the Council vacated by bhe annual retirement of three members.—Mr Gerald O'Halloran, Secretary of the Dilworth Ulster Institute, wrote notifying the Council that the trustees proposed extending the water pipe from its present termination through the paddocks to the neighbourhood of the Remuera station. He asked permission to supply water from their pipe to Buckland's sale yards. The request was granted subjecb to the approval of tho City Council, and the price for the water was" fixed at Is 9d per 1,000 gallons.
