FIRES.
A large building at Governor's Bay, Lyt telton, until recently used aa tho White Clills Hotel, was burned down on Aug. 21. Tho building w,-is unoccupied, and insured in the Now Zealand Office for £400. A sixteen rooinod houee, occupied by Mrs Branson, owned by tho Rank of Now South Wales, situated at Rivcrlands, Blenheim, was destroyed by lire on 9. It was insured for £COO in tho National, and the furniture for £200 in the Liverpool, London, and Globe.
A fire, which started in the bakehouse of J, L. Choyno, North Invercargill, on Aug. 29, destroyed the entire promises and stock of groceries ; also, the stock of Miss Gibson, adjoining. Cheyno, tho owner of both buildings, had £1,000 in the New Zealand office on his property. Gibson's stock was insured for £100 in the New Zealand. A fire broke out on August 14th in the promises of Mr M. Copeland, grocor, Manukau Road, Parnell. Tho lire waa soon extinguished, bub not beforo damage had been done to the building.and ictock. Tho building, owned by Mr David Creme.n, was insured in tho Phcenix Office tor £300. Air Copeland's stock was inBured in the National for £200, and in the Victoria for £150, and his furniture was insured in tho National for £300.
A six-roomed !».ouso at Linwood, Christchurch, occupied by C. Wilson, was destroyed by fire on tho night of Aug. 29th. It was insura! in tho New Zealand office for £400, and tho furniture in the Royal Exchange for £200. Wilson losos cycling trophies, valued at a considerable sum. The shop and dwelling-house of G. Mulligan at Addington was also burned tho came night. Insurances : Building, £250 in the Commercial Union ; furniture, £100 in the Australian Alliance.
Shortly aftor noon on Aug. 31 a somewhat destine-ve (ire broko oub in Park Avenue, Grafton district, resulting in tho destruction of property estimated "to havo been worth close on £1,000. The house occupied by Mr John Passmore, manager of the Fibre Works, Stanley-street, was destroyed, and the adjoining houses, occupied by Mr Gilmore and Mr Charles Mackie, coachbuilder, also caught. Mr Gilmore'a house, a large two-storey one (which was owned by Mrs Richmond), was gutted, and a large portion of the furniture burnt. Mr Mackie was somewhat more fortunate, his damage being estimated only at about £5. The residence of Mr Penzhoe, adjacent to Mrs Richmond's, also suffered slight damage, the extent being aboub £10.
