ENTERTAINMENTS.
Aconcebt was held on Friday evening in the Choral Hall, in aid of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. His Lordship Bishop Cowie presided. The programme consisted of a number of action songs' and choruses,by about 400 children from the Band of Hope Union, and the following other items :—Spng, " Ora Pro Nobis," Mrs A. Coabes; song and chorus, •• Breakers Ahead," Mr S. G. Frith ; song, " Daddie" Miss Lizzie Warren; song, "The Holy City," Miss Birdie Butler, song, " Marguerita," Mr Chat Kissling; recitation, " Beth Gelerb," Miss Carnahan ; and corneb solo by Master Percy West. Mr H. Connell acted as accompanist. In bhe course of the evening, Bishop Cowie made a few pertinent remarks on bhe usefulness of the. Society,..and ,the Key. F. Warner gave an address on the duty of showing kindness to the dumb creation. An entertainment in connection with Sb. Barnabas' Anglican Church, Mb. Eden, was held in Sb. Sepulchre's schoolroom, Symonds streeb, on Friday evening lasb, the attendance being large. The performance consisted of a production by amateurs of H. J. Byron's three-act comedy " War bo bhe Knife." The play was well staged, and excellent music was played as overtures by the Auckland College- and Grammar School Band,uhdert the' ''.condndborsnip - of »Mr Trevithick.. '■ i." , ...* ■~ The annual concert tendered to the Young Men's Christian Association by Herr OarL Schmitb, was given on Friday nighb in thn Lecture Hall of the' Association's Buildings. The ball was crowded. A string quintette consisting of: Herr Schmitt, Messrs Burton, Macfarlane, Coney and Bunby, opened bhe concert with a tasteful rendering of " Esmeralda." Mr E. Hosking sang, " Tom Bowling " and " She Wore a Wreath of Roses," successfully. Miss Marion Sam psora contributed a good ibem in "Dear Heart," which was encored ; and again made a succesß of her singing of "Aye Maria." In response to an encore for the latter item, she sang "The Daily Question." Miss Millie Peak (a pupil of Professor Schmitb) contributed the violin solo " Fausb" in a manner which spoke volumes for bhe braining she had received. Mr Clarke Johnson gave two excellent solos, " The Yeoman's Wedding Song," and " Blow High, Blow Low," and Miss Mennie(a pupil of Profeasor Schmibb) meb with a greab success in her singing of Braga's "Serenade," and Behrend's "Daddie." The string quintette contributed three other items to the programme, ft gavotte, "Under bhe Southern Cross," "Kleine Fantasia," and "Hungarian March." The first-mentioned, a composition by Mr G. Paque, L.A."M., was well played, and as favourably received. At the,' interval Mr Buddie made a few remarks thanking Herr Schmibb and -bhe other artists for coming forward to give their services for bhe benefit of the Association. , ' V
An entertainment in aid of the funds of the. Edendale Presbyterian Mission was given by the members of the senior Bible olass on Friday night), "and proved a success. The various items, consisting of songs, recitations, dialogues and tableaux were all well rendered and much appreciated by the audience.
A very successful social wbb given on Friday night in the Foresters" Hall, Karangahape Road, by Courts City.of Auckland and Zeal an dia as a return visit to '.the female Uourc of Forestere,. Court Chisman, which court haa 70 members aqd is still increasing. The D.C.R., Bro. James Stichbury, opened proceedings with a few remarks, after which sixteen dances were gone through. The following contributed songs and recitations :—Bros. Ingram, Price, Webb, Mr Parriah, and Sisters Murray, Garratb, G. Willis, Bain, etc. The Broa. Neumegen and Bro. Butler officiated as M.C.'s and at the piano in a very able manner. The catering was very satisfactorily carried oat by Bro. Fell, of Wellington-street. .
The fortnightly meeting of Hope of Auckland Tent of Rechabites was held on Thursday evening last. The advisability of bringing a juvenile funeral benefit into force was discussed end deferred to next meeting. The Secretary reported £75 added the'sick fund for last quarter, showing total funds, sick and funeral, of nearly £3,800 at date.
