Although there is little to chronicle in the way of speculation on the race, etill the chances of the horses engaged 'are a fruitful topic of conversation, and the 'doings on the track at early morn have been watched with a deal of interest during the last) few days. Impulse, Mahaki and Lottie bowl along in their work in good style, and what little Prime Warden has done so far has pleased the course watchers. On the other hand Royal Rose is going none too well, but it ia yet too early to wipe out his chance. I will make a definite selection Inter on. Ib was an •' off" morning at Ellerslie this morning. Prime Warden and Impulse remain equal favourites for the Cup at 3 to 1.

PAST AUCKLAND CUPS,

Nearly twenty-one years have winged their flight since the firab Auckland Cup, 2 miles, run under the auspices of the present Racing Club, was won by Mr R. Ray's Templeton on Boxing Day, December 26th, 1874. He carried the impost of Bsb 111b, bub there were only two other starters, viz., Mr J. Wattß* Toi (6st 81b), subsequently dam of Kingask, and Mr W. Walters' Yabterina (9st). J. Watbie rode Templeton who was a great favcurite in those days, for he was one of Traducer's greatest sons. Old Yatterina since gave the turf Libeller, Matchlock, Kingfisb, and Leorina. The year 1876 saw .the late Mr W. Walters' •popular colours to the fore on Dainty Ariel and Fanny Fisher's well-performed son, King Fisher ; H. Redwood's Guy Fawkes (8.8), being second ; and Tgi third. Ab this period Guy Fawkea was a noted racer. In 1577 two Caps were tun, the first being on the lsb January, when Mr J. Watts's Ariel (by Dainty Ariel — Una), who was a big favourite, got home, the other places being filled by Mr R. Ray's Danebury and Mr W; Walters's Isaak Walton. Belie and Don also ran. On the 27th December, at the end of tho same year, Mr F. Bolfcon's five • year • old (Lara gob home in fronb of Elsa and Venus Transit, and the two following years, 1878 and 1879, Ariel again triumphed—on the second occasion carrying the coloars of thab good old local sport, Mr M. Edgar, who still loves to enthuse on the Tietorieß of his pet Ariel, who, by-the-bye, only died in the Hawke's Bay province the other day. In Lara's year the field was wretchedly weak. From 1874 till ■1877 (New Year's Day) the distance of the Cnpwaß two miles, and from Lara's Cup in the same year till 1887, 21 mile?, when ib was again reduced bo 2 miles. In 1880, Mr H. P. Lance's Foul Play (Bsb 121b), and ridden by Derritb, gained tho verdict from the Auckland-owned Maid .of Honour > (aince dam of Freedom) and Ariel, libeller and King Quail started in this race and the contest was remarkable for the death of the jockey Nolan, who was riding Libeller. Foul Play wenb oub with odds of 6 to 4 on him. This race was Ariel'a fifth Auckland Cup. In 1881, Mr 8. T. Horsfall's King Quail (by Yattendon —Quail) secured a victory. Among the field was Fitzhercules, old Rewi, and Mr tJ. Bates' Hilda (a Wellington Cup winner). The year 1882 saw Mr J. Pilbrow's three-year-old colb Welcome Jack romp home to the delighb oi the Southern division, and he ran the 2J miles in 4<nin 7Jsec, which wa« the fastest time recorded in the lace up to thab time. Tho late Mr R. H. Vallance'a Salvage (by Cast-away—Mist), again won for the foreigners in 1883, Tim tVhiffler and Libeller filling the other places, while in the rear division was WeiCome Jack. Many Aucklanders will member bhab year's contest with anything but feelings of pleasure. Salvage started • favourite ab 6 to 4 against, the totalizator dividend being £2 10s. In the year 1884 the weather was web and the course heavy. Mr P. F. Tancred's roan - horse Administrator was served up a great 11 pot," and started ab 5 to 4 on in a held Qf air, Libeller being among the number^ The winner turned up in Mr G. Bates gelding The Poeb, who won easily by four lengths from the New Plymouth-owned Normandy, with Musket's handsome i daughter Woodnymph third. The year 1885 saw the five-year-old Nelson surprise the spectators ab large by simply galloping over his opponents ab the finish, and pubtiog up a 24 mile record, compassing the distance in 4min. The game Waitin and Victoria were the other place-getters, »nd among the field was Tasman, StoneyJilrst? Necklace (now a Wellington Park stud matron), Tebford, Turquoise and JJoul Shot, the Great Northern Derby winner. This year the added money of tho Cup was l,OOOaova and probably ib abbracted the strongest field that has gone to the post in ,thehiatoryof therace. Altogether there were fi^een starters. In 1886 Nelßon again triiWphed with 9st 81b in the saddle ; strange tojiay, Waitiri was again second, and Clogs third, Lochiel, Friendship, Victoria and lady Narah running unplaced. The added taoneywas l.OOOsovs, bub in the year following the stake was reduced to 750bovs. The race was run on New Year's Day *lien Nelson, carrying 9sb 121b, again gladdened the heart of his owner and the Pablio at large by winning from Clogs »nd Sextanb and four' others, the yjvidends being f 1 12a and £1 10s. > the following year the Cup distance ■■Jw reduced to two miles, which ib ;P*B remained ab ever since. Lochiel (Bsb to), ridden by the late W. Clifford,

carried Mr G. G. Stead* yellow jaekeb to the front. Hilda, then a three-year-old, was second and British Lion third. The o k ° es was rtm in 3min 32sec. "With w 1 ,Nelaon ran unplaced, bub he wWn onhie|kneea, and Manton (Bat ■no) fell near the turn for home. The year tollowing Leopold scored a popular win for Mr C. Beresford," and in 1890 Craeksbob, ayrs (Bst 31b) made a name for himself by running the two miles in 3min 30fseo, Uilda being second and Ciasy third. In iw Jt he " roße and white stripes "of Mr W. Walters' proved triumphant, with Coalscubtle second, and The Dreamer third. A great horse won the Cup in 1892 in Mr L. D. Nathan's colb St. Hippo, and despite that he was only three years old he carried Bsb 91b, and carved out the two miles in the splendid time of 3min 30J96C, the fastest vet recorded for the Auckland Cup ; in fact the time wai the record in this colony until Rosefeldb cub ib down to 3min 29sec in the New Zealand Cup of 1893. St. Hippo had the services of our best local horseman, J. Gallagher, Brigand (7eb 41b) finished second to St. Hippo, and that great mare Merganser (Bab) was third. Impulse, with 78b 81b, Pinfire, the winner of the Cup in the previous year, and The Workman, figured among the unplaced division. Last year Skirmisher waß served up a scorching hot favourite, bub the greatest outsider of the eight starters proved successful, Major George's colt Pegasus (sired by Nelson) winning under 7st 51b in the very slow time of 3min 39min. Another outsider in Ida (7st 41b) finished second, and the fancied Rosefeldo (Bsb 51b) third. This year the added money of the Cup is reduced to 500iovs.

Strange to say, none of Musket's gets have been successful in the Cup. The greatest weight carried to victory was carried by Nelaon, viz., 9sb 121b in ihe year 1887, and W. Brown has been the mosb successful jockey in the race, having ridden Nelson on each occasion he won, while he also rode Crackshob in 1890. The late George Williams rode the winner two years, and Fred Matthews is credited with a similar success. Major George is the most successful owner, having won four Cups.

Ib will be noticed thab a mare has never yeb been successful in winning the Cup, bub one of bhe sex has acted as runner up for seven consecutive years, and again last year. Will Lottie break the spell this year? The following is a list of past Auckland Cup winners in tabulated form:— The following is a list of past Auckland Cup winners in tabulated form:—
