The death is recorded of Mr E. A. GiQord, one of the beat-known of New Zealand artists, at the ripe old age of 75 years. Although Mr Gilford had resided in New Zealand seventeen years he possessed an English reputation as an artist, having had a number of his pictures hung in the Royal Academy. With the exception of two or three years spent in the Auckland and Napier districts, since his arrival in the colony ho has resided in Oamaru, where bis daughter, Mrs D. S. Montagu also lives. His son ie headmaster of a school at Bulls. One brother, Mr John Gi fiord, resides in Auckland, and another, the Row A. Gifford, was formerly incumbent of the Anglican Church at Oamaru, and recently attracted public attention by his controversy with Bi&hop Nevillo,
Tenders havo closed with the acting German Consul (Mr Langguth) for the repairs to the warship Busscird. MrG. Niccol undertakes the re-docking aud woodwork ; Messrs Seagal' Bros.' tender for overhauling tho boilerb was accepted, and Messrs G, Fraser and Son attend bo the rest of the machinery. Messrs Rosa and Ansenne are to supply the ship chandlery, etc. It is expected that the work, which will be commenced at once, will be completed in about six weeks. Mr Logan's bonder tor an extra gig for the warship has been accepted.
Profesßor Carollo's picnic on Satureay t° Motutapu was a most successful one. The Eagle, chartered for the day, book down on her two trips between four and five hundred people, who, after spending a pleasant time on tho favourite island, were brought up to town again in good time. Professor Carrollo spared no trouble to uetske the outing a pleasant one, and his efiorta were eminently successful.
