MURDER OF A GERMAN TRADER.
When the stoaaer Archer was in.the Marshall Group of islands, saya the Sydney " Herald," of October Bth, the exiled chief Mafeaafa, of Samoa, was met and was glad to have a chab with Mr B. Hird, an old friend, who was on board the Archer. The chief was greatly interested in the accounts of the righting between Malietoa and Matasese. Mataafa is in good health, and lives in the hope of again seeing his beautiful island home before long. The Archer on Saturday brougbb word from the Gilbert Islands of the murder of Mr Kannangieser, aGernoan trader. Tkemurder was committed at Butaritaribya native from a neighbouring island. The King and Council arrested the criminal, and are waiting the return of the British Resident), Mr Swayne, for the trial to take place. Drought continuos in some parts of the Gilbert Islands. Friends in Sydney on Saturday roceived word of tho death of Captain Schnieders, of the barque John Wesley. The captain for years traded oub of Sydney. His death occurred at Jaluit in July last, che cause being heart disease. .. , . ..-..-
