CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the City Schools Committee waa held last nighb. Present: Mr J. Blades (Chairman), Dr. McArthur and Messrs Ferrell, Squirrel, Fairs, Crowe. Teachers.—Mjos M. J. Shepherd wrote that she intended resigning her position as assistant at the Nelson-street School.— Received. Leave of absence was granted to Miss Edenborough and Mr W. K. C. Walker to attend the University examinations. Mr Croain, headmaster of Nelsoristreet School, wrote thab .Miss Angove had entered upon her duties as assistant teacher. The Committee approved of the appointment of Miss Elsie D. Grant to the staff of assistants us Nelson • street School.

jßeresford-street School. — The Chief Inspector wrote regarding the verandah on the north wing of the Beresford-etreet School. He stated that it cut off bo much light from the two lower rooms aa to make them unfit to be used as schoolrooms.— Tho matter vras referred to the Chairman and AJr.Farrell.

Standard Examinations. —The Chief Inspector wrote that he was willing to subttiib for the information of school committees the following :—(l) A copy,of the examination report furnished by the inspector of the Board of Education ; (2) a copy of the examination schedules showing all the passes and failures' in pass subjects and in standards; (5) a schedule showing in brief the'lnspector's judgment of the proficiency of each class in the various class and additional subjects. From this data school committees should be able to form a sound opinion of the merits and tailings of the members of the school staff. If further information ia desired, special application would have to be made to the Board.—lt was agreed to write to the Board .of Education approving of Mr Fobrie's communication.

VVelleslev • street School.—Mr H. Worbhingboh wrote, explaining the cause of failure in tho recenb standard examination of pupils in Standards IV. and VI. He attributed the failures to the irregular attendance of pupils on account of sickness, and the fact that a few of the children had been admitted juab previous to the examination. He also reminded the Committee that during tbe year Class IV. girls were under charge of four different teachers, of whom, he stated, one only (who was removed from the school) waa competent and efficient for so large a class.—Several members of the Committee expressed dissatisfaction with the explanation as regarded the failures in Standards IV. and Vl.—lt waa decided to ask how ib was that for six months prior to tho examination the Fourth Standard wag in charge of a pupil teacher? and further to request him to supply the Committee with further information cb to she reason of the failures ia Standard VI.

'Over-age Pupils."—Communications were read from the headmasters of the Wellos-ley-itireef;'' Bereefortf-sfcreeb"' and . Napierstreet schools giving the names aiid ages-of pupils in the Seventh Standard. Tbe list showed a number of pupils over school age. —The Chairman expressed the opinion that he' wSuld'like tbf see' ail' children overls yeara.turned out of the ecliool.—The matter was referred to a Committee of five to report. Chapel-street School.—The Chairman laid figures on tbe table, showing the localities where the children .attending Chapei-streeb School resided aa follows :-- North Ward, 92;" South' Ward, 112; East Ward, 29; Karangahape, 19 ; Eden Terrace, 2; Parnell, 2; Newton, 1.; Ponsonby, 10 ; roll number, 267.'— It was agreed to etmd the figureß to the Board of Education.
