Messrs Henderson and Spraggon, the owners of the cutter Janet, received a letter yesterday from Captain Berbelsen, announcing his arrival ab Sydney. In the letter the captain states thab the beche-de-mer fishing cruise was most successful, and the Janet behaved well throughout. He states thab owing to the Chinese war the market is unsettled, and ib will probably be two or three weeks before the cutter will be able to sail for Auckland.

By bhe 5.9. Catterthun, which reached Sydney the other day, news was receivad of a serious collision off the Japan coast between the steamer Sakata Maru, of the Japanese mail lino, which vessel was in Sydney a few months ago, and the steamer Bankoku Maru. The Sakata Maru had a considerable portion of her stern carried away, and the other boat had her bows completely smashed in. Luckily, the B.ankoku Maru was light ab the time, having only troops on board, otherwise she must have foundered. >■■■'■ ■ ■'■
