LATER.
(by telegraph.—parliamentary re
* rORTER.)
Wellington, this day.
The rumour current here that Mr James Coates is to be appointed Presidenb of tho Bauk of New Zealand may probably turn out to be correct, but it is altogether incorrect to assume, as has been done in come messages sent from Wellington, that he has been appointed. Nothing has been settled as to the President, and albhoueh I believe negotiations are pending between the Government and Mr Coates, they might eaeily break down, as in the case of Mr Watson, of the Colonial Bank. The matter is a very difficult one to be considered by the Governmenb in their choice of a man, and the delicacy of the position in which the new President will bo placed is such that) no cautious man will hastily accepb of ib. Ib is nob surprising, then, that both parties to the contracb should not wish anything published abroad till a definite settlement has been arrived at. I think lam safe in stating absolutely that the appointmenb to fehe Presidency will not be made for a few days, and" 1 vonture to predict that if the position is * offered "to Mr Coates, he will determine to stand by the Bank of whose chief direction he has lately assumed control. THE AUDITORSHIP. •As to the auditorahip (a matter to be settled later), ib will be thrown open to public competition.
