THE NEW PRESIDENT.
NEGOTIATIONS WITH MR JAMES
COATES
PROBABLE RENEWAL OF AMALGA
MATION NEGOTIATIONS.
{BY TELEGRAPH.—PARLIAMENTARY RE
PORTER.)
Wellington, this day, UasiODß is still busy with the names of probable and possible presidents of the Bank of New Zealand. Sir Julius Vogel and Mr Walter Johnston are both mentioned, but there is not, I believe, any ground for • associating their names with the position. A more likely report is that which alleges Mr Jas. Goateß, general manager of the National Bank, has beenofferod the appointment. The official announcementof what has been done will be made in a few days. A strong impression still remains that proposals for amalgamation of the Colonial Bauk and the Bank of New Zealand have not been finally abandoned, but tbat they will be resumed during the recesa.
