POLICE COURT.-(THIS DAY.)

(Before Mr H. W. Norfchcroft, S.M.) Drunkenness.—James McAuley was fined 10s and costs 10a ■ 6d, or, in default, four days' imprisonment. A young woman ■ named. Rose' Barker, tor her third offence of drunkenness within six months, was given the" alternative of a fine of 40s, or seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. Threa first offenders were also dealt with; Onowaß dismissed .with a caution, another, v a young woman, wan fined 5a and costs, or 48i>our8, whilst the third, for being drunk on a Sunday—a more serious offence in the opinion of the Bench than being drunk on any other day of the week —was fined 10s, or in default 48 houra.

Dock-stealing.—Two boys named David Green (aged 12), and Robert MeCuilough (aged 15), were charged with stealing six ducks from Captain A. J. Kitley. The former of the accused was brought) before the, Court on Saturday lasb and remanded till to-day.—MeCuilough pleadeH guilty, bub the other accused, though admitting that he took the ducks,! pleaded nob guilty. —In reply to questions from the Bench, Sergeant Gamble said the parents of the accused were res-, pecta'ble people. The boy Green, however, was a brother of the two lads who were convicted for breaking into*Mr Rew'a grocery shop in Victoria-streeb recently, and was evidently bent on following in their footsteps.—Mr E. J. Sw»nn, the person to whom the ducks had been sold, said that the elder lad, McCullougb, was in the habit of coming to his shop with ducks to sell, which he always aaid came from his mother, in Wellington-streeb. The namo given was " Watkins." When the accused did nob cqhio into the shop himself he would send in some other boy?, bat witness knew they came from the same place, as the bag was always the" same, whilst the namiß given was a}way£ " Welkins.!'. He began to-suspect there was something wrong when the ducks were beiijg offered to him at ridiculously low prices.—Mr Nortbcroffc. adjourned '. the case till v tomorrow, to allow the poljge to collect?' aotn^f information concerning 'this families to which the two accused belong.
