THE AUCKLAND CYCLE COMPANY.
A building hits just, been completed in Cusbom-sbreeb bio the order of the Auckland. Cycle Company, in regard to which we have obtained the following, particulars from Mr H. Young, the cyble expert in charge of the manufacturing "department. The firm (which has beeu aboub three yeara in existence) will ■ build, as heretofore, the most improv d and latest forms and Btyles of cyles, viz.,) what is known as the "Humber," including, roadster, racing and a special machine for ladies,, and will introduce nothing but1 firsb-clasß materials and workmanssb.ii in iato' their manufactures, which Will continue to ba known as ttye ["Onelow" bicycles. Wo were shown1 tbeisa machines, which am of a very elegant! and substantial' appearance combined with lightness, and are fitted with the latest Humber bobtom brackjets, beab weedless steel tubing obtainable in England, and the latest patjterns of pneumatic and ' other rubber! tyres. Mr. Young informed us ..that the •'Oiiblow" machines will be set, and passed through bis own, hands, he \being &n experb in cycle . construction'; which means there will be no soi-called ''cheap" work, turned out ,by| the firm. He, alsc claimed that tha coionial-made machinet are better than tih'ose imported, more care and time being bestowed upon their construction, and ithe very best' workmanship guaranteed. .Mr Young is well known by cyclists generally,' having been foruoniie years connected with one of the besb co lontal cycle firms, and_ having had built under jus personalsupervision, mosb of tne letiditig- faab machines, including tbab rklderi by the Australian amateur champion, 1)3 r W. J. Hay ward, who, while ridingf thits machine, haß been winner of many prizi'S both in Australia) and New Zealand. Another point of much importance to cyclists is that of being able bo obtain bicycles built Am the spot. Every rider having a different' position requires i the machine to st(ib his \ particular height, weighb and natural po, sition, very frequently necessitatiing tlil3 machine being specially constructed. t?hiß matter, Mr Young states, has been iiiade a special Btudy, and has in the past great satisfaction. ' ■.:... \ As Auckland is noted for\ its hills, many would-be cyclists are for tins reason deterred from the baaljbhful pastl-me. This the r firm are taking into consideration, and are building a machine which wiv'l make hillclimbing easy and pleasant; enabling bhbSß ~ who have hitherto stood off on blhis account to now enjoy the pleasures an. d benefits of cycle riding. Another mi.achino to which attention was directed was the Lady Onslow bicycle, 1 specially conabructed to suit the fair sex, A Although the pastime of cycling is nob indulged in, to any extent, in Auckland \by the ladies, it is no ■ uncommon sight see them riding in the Southern towpe of the colony, and they are getting so superb in the art thab ib takes .tha sterner sex all their time bo keep itace >fibh them when oub for a blow; when the facb becomes knttwn tliab this firm are building these machines, »a shall soon expect to see the AuckUn.vl ladies enjoying the healthful excreuo, which! has hitherto been a luxury for the gentle ui&n V only. The oycle work*, jueb completed \ in a mosb satisfactory manner by Mr J. H. \ Beamish, the contractor, is & cvi-o-storey building in brick and cement, andl is fitted with all the latesb improvements in tools and appliances for cycle manufacture, viz., screw-cutting lathes, emery wheels, brazing and smith's forges^ complete t polishing planb, large size enamelling store,, wheel-building- tools, etc., the machinery being driven by a 5 horsepower engine. The showroom and office are on the ground - floor, and the manager, Mr J. E. Skeates, will be happy to point oub the special features of the different Bfeyles of machines to intending purchasers, The firm will, in addition to selling for cash, supply customers on a very liberal system of time payments, thus bringing their bicycles within the reach of all. We wish the firm every suc-cess-in their new venture.
