PUPIL TEACHERS' EXAMINATION.
THE RESULTS.
At the meeting of the Board of Education to-day the list of candidates who had passed the recenb pupil teachers' examination was submitted. The inspector's report stated: " The standard of qualification is fifty per cenb. of the maximum marks in each of the following subjects: Reading, writing, spelling, dictation, arithmetic, grammar and composition; thirty per cent, of bhe maximum marks in the following subjects : — Geography, history, science, school management; fifty per cent, of the aggregate number of marks obtainable in all subjecbs." The following is a synopsis of the results :— Candidates.— 223 presented (61 malea and 162 females); absenb, 2; failed, 34 males and 108 females—bobal, 142 ■ passed, 26 malea and 53 females—bobal, 79. First - YRar Porn. Teachers. — Presented, 49 (malea 13, females 36); failed, 3 males and 16 females—bobal, 19; passed, 10 males, 20 females—total, 30. Second Year Pupil Teachers.—Presented, 17 males, 48 females, total 6.5; absent, 3 females ; failed, 1 male and 11 females, total 12; paased, 16 males and 34 females, total 50. The total number presented was 337, of whom five were absent, 173 failod aud only 159 passed. The Chairman (Mr R. Udy) commented upon the increased percentage of failures. He stated tbat as a matter of fact far more had failed than passed. The Rev. Mr Batea said lie felt bhe Board was nob doing iba duty to the pupil teachers. He thoughb arrangements might be made with existing insbibubiona—bhe University College Council and the Grammar School—to improve the education of the pupil teachers. Ho did nob wish to say anything againsb the young people, bub tho Board should givo serious attention bo improving tho status and education of the pupil teachers. The Chairman agreed with Mr Babes, and suggested that the report should be referred to a committee. Mr Lambe coincided with Mr Bates and the Chairman. Mr Woodward said that pupil teachers wanted selecting earlier. Some children had innate roughness of character, and would never make quod teachers. Tbe selection should be made by the inspectors. It was cruel to throw back aspirants after they bad been training for two yeais. The Chairman said thab when the candidates failed they should bo pub away, and nob as at present be kept in position under pressure. He had no hesitation in saying that was done owing to tho skirt pulling that had been going on in the pasb, and bho result was the retention of incompetent teachers. Mr S. Luke said he thought that more scholars should be passod to the Grammar School, as he looked upon the whole system of education as ono. The Board decided to refer the matter to a committee of the whole Board to reporb upon. lb was further decided thab those pupil teachors who had twice failed to pass bo notified thab bheir employmenb under the Board will cease ab tho Slab of Augusb next.
