CHAIRMEN OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Chairmen of bho various city and suburban School Comrnitbees was hold in tho Wclloal.y-a.reot School Inst evening when thef illowiug gentlemen were present: Messrs J. Blades (Ciby), N. XV. Pollard (Parnell), R. Holmes (Newmarket), S" Clarke (Grafbon), J. Patterson (Ponsonby), and W. C. Thompson (New Lynn). Apologies were received from Mr Dick Otahuhu) and Mr T. Seaman (Takapuna). Mr J. Blades, who was voted to the chair, said he was extremely sorry thab bhere was nob a larger attendance. Notices had been senb to twenty-four Committees, and tha fact of only six being represented he hoped did not indicate that the ab.entingCommittees wereunfavourablo bo the formation of tho Association. He bhoughb it was a desirable thing to have such an Associabion, if only to meeb but two or three times a year, so as to ventilate any matters thab might arise between the various Committees and the Board or tho Minister of Education. Their chief difficulty, he said, would be the queation of finance. He had written to the Board upon the subjecb, asking them if they would sanction the paymenb of a small subscription oub of the school funds, but they had replied saying thab they had no power to sanction Euch payments. Mr Pollard said ho did nob think that the proposed body was going to be entirely antagonistic to the Board, but ib would rather bo in a position frequently bo give the Board assistance in a number of bhings. If bhe Associabion were once formed, those committees in the counbry could thon appoint substitutes to represent them ut the various meetings. Ho would propose to deal with the matter of finance by asking each member of the School Committees to contribute ls each, tho total amounb of which would fully meeb bhe expenses of the Association. Ha then moved " That in the opinion of this meeting, it is desirable to form a Chairman of School Committees Association." The motion was seconded by Mr Clarke and carried. The Chairman read out a rough draft of rules under which bhe Association could be carried on. In the.c rules the object is stated to be for the purpose of discussing and taking into consideration any educational matters affecting ail schools in the Auckland district. The general meetings of the Association are proposed to be held quarterly, and tho annual meatin? in the month of May of each year, immediately after the election of School Committees has taken placo. A Sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Blades, Holmes, Pollard, and Clarke, wa3 appointed to consider the rules and prepare a suitable notice to be forwarded to the various School Committeos. A resolution was also passed, on the motion of Mr Pollard, tbat the Chairmen of School Committees be requested to bring ths matter of providing funds for the Association before their respective Committees, aud thab the presenb meeting stand adjourned for one month.
