NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Newmarket* Borough Council was held lasb evening* and was attended, by Mr F. G, Clayton (Mayor of Newmarket, presiding), and Crs* Lawn, Heron, Lumpkin, Laurie, Whyman, Stone, Edgerley, Page and Angus. - Swimming Bath.—The Committee fur< nished a skefcoh plan recommending a sit* for the proposed swimming bath near the bowling green, and bounded by the bowling green, the road. and the railway. —It waa agreed to adopt the site and record it in the minutes, and to write bo Mr Keesiug;" intimating tbe action of the Council, with ft copy of the sketch plan. Railway-stebct Drain.—The Mayor ro» ported that with reference to the Railway* street drain the Railway District Engineer, in company wibh himself and Or, Laxon, bad inspected tbe vicinity, and the Bngineer bad recommended, the Council to get the permission of the Department to connect the Council's drain with the Bailway-streefc drain under the railway bank.—lt was decided to interview the Chief Commissioner of Railways, now in Auckland, asking permission' to connect with the drain in Railway-street, and a Committee, consisting of tbe Mayor, Messrs Laurie and Laxon, should wait on the Commissioner on the matter. : - Finance*—Accounts amounting to £264 3s lld were paused for payment, Sawsy,—The Mayor moved, " Thab the salary of the Inspector of Nuisances be fixed at £5 per annum," and the motion was agreed to, * ■ v Licensing Emotion.—The Town Clerk read a notification stating tbat the total expenses : for tbe> recent licensing election in the Parnell district were £45 3s 7d of wbioh £2116s 3d fell to Newmarkeb's share to pay. Or. Edgerley said it seemed to him that) bhe expenses were monstrous, and he thought the. Council, should object, to pay the gum sob down againsb tbe New* market borough. Ib was decided to return the account to tbe Returning Officer asking for further particulars as to tbe expenses. Epsom Reserve.—On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to request Mr F, Lawry, M.H.R. for Parnell, to oppose in the House of Representatives a Bill proposed by Mr Abbott with regard to Selling a, portion of a reserve at Epsom, in connection with tbe Blind Institute. Newmarket Hall.—lt was decided to give nobioe of the intention of the Council to introduce at) next session of Parliament a Bill .to. amend the Newmarket Hall Act of 1874, giving the Council power to borrow on the hall. A draft of the Bill was read by the Town Clerk.—lt was agreed to instruct) Messrs Hesketh and Richmond -to proceed with the details connected with.the passing of the Bill through tbe House.
