NEWTON.
Messes English (Mayor), Bouskill, Shackelford, Donald, Porter, Webley, and Daven. port, attended the meeting of the above Council last night.
Finance.—With regard to the suggestion thab £150 should be borrowed to erect a cottage for the caretaker, the Finance Commitbee reported that the Council had no power to borrow excepting by overdraft, or after a vote of the ratepayers had been taken, neither of which courses was recom■aended.—The reporb was adopted. Leave of Absence was granted to Cr. McMasters for four meetings as he is absent from the city. Fencing Across the Roads.—Or. Davenporb drew attention to the fact thab in some instances tbe gates erected by private perbous across unformed public roads in the Borough had been chained, thus effectually closing the thoroughfare bo tbe public. The Town Clerk said tbe matter would be attended to. Rose Road.—Cr. Webley said there were one or two holes in Rose Road thab required attending to. The Council resolved thab two loads of Bcoria be granted for repairing purposes. . Accounts to the amounb of £45 4s 6d were authorised for payment.
