BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held on the 18th inst, there being present: Crs. Bartley, Kay, Riddle, White and Wifcheford. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Kay was voted to the chair. A letter was read from the Auckland Harbour Board consenting, in reply to a request which had been sent to them, to rai9e the whaif at the land end by a gontle slope to the extent of aboub 40 feet, so as to enable the Council to fill in the approach thereto, thereby giving a satisfactory grade to the road in course of re-formation. The half-yearly balance• sheeb, duly audited, was received from the AuditorGeneral. On behalf of the Committee appointed to carry out the grading of the road approaching the wharf, Cr. White reported that the work of raising the wharf was nearly completed by the Harbour Board, and thac men were already employed filling in the road to meet the wharf elevation, sufficient 9-inch pipes having been ordered to use thereat. No tenders were received for the 200yd9 2in broken metal, and on, the Town Clerk submitting a sample of Rangitoto metal, which the Waitemata County Council were proposing to use and for which they had invited tenders receivable on the 19th insb., it was rtsolved that a Committee, consisting of the Mayor and [Crs. White and i Witheford, be appointed with power to act, to confer with Mr Low as to the delivery of 200 yds at the same rate as his former tender for 400 yds, and also to interview the County Council with reference to the Rangitoto metal after they had received tenders for the same.
The following resolutions were also carried:—(l) That tenders be invited to be returnable on the Ist prox. for the necessary drainage required owing to the recent slip, in accordance with plans and specifications prepared by the engineer. (2) That on rising this meeting standp adjourned to Ist February next. (3) Thab tenders be invited for the delivery during the current year of Sugar Works ash on the several roads in the district, also to be returnable at the adjourned meeting. (4) In reply to an application from Mr Harris to have formed an entrance to his property, the Council to inspect and -■;• port to next meeting. (5) Thab the day labour employed in the borough be distributed according to localities, appointments to be made ab next meeting, (b) Thab the engineer, Mr Hammond, be instructed to supervise the drainage ab slip as already arranged. On behalf of Committee appointed to interview the Minister of Public Works, and also Mr Ehrenfried, asking for substantial assistance in carrying oub the necessary works at the slip, Cr. Withefbrd reported that the Committee were unablo to obtain a satisfactory interview with the Minister (Hon. J. Cadman), owing to his many engagements, but thab Mr Ehrenfried had promised to contribute towards the work of drainage the sum of £14 10a. The footpath by Mr McCarthy's store was reported to have been completed with the exception of covering *ith ash. The question of procuring shell for footpaths was deferred to adjourned meeting.
