AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the Auckland City' Council was held last evening in the Municipal Chambers, and was presided over by • bh6 new Mayor, Mr J. J. Holland, for bhe first bime. There were also presenb : Messrs J. Trenwibh, R. Farrell, Bewson, Patterson^ A. Glover, G. Powley, 0. S. Wright,, Warren, Garratt, P. Dignan, J. Swales, J. T. Julian, J. Thornes, A. Kidd, J, Grey and C. Heskebh. Tender for Drainpipes.—The Council decided to accept the tender of Mr R. 0. Clark, junr., for drain pipes. Cab Stand. —Mr W. J. Beale, Shortiandstreet, wrote asking the Council to remove the cab-stand in front of his business premises in Shortland-streeb, as the stand waa a greab nuisance bo him. —The Mayor and Mr Farrell said bhab Mr Beale had a sub; sbantial grievance.—Referred to the Streets Commibbee. Baths.—The Secretary of the Auckland Swimming Club wrote with regard to tho Albert-street Baths, asking the Council ba erecb gas-fitbings in the baths, for lighting purposes ab night, the object of bhe Club being insbrucbion in swimming.—Referred bo bhe Legal Commibbee. Napier-street.—A letter was received from M. Hamilton complaining of the 1 dangerous state of the steep embankment 1 in Napier-streeb. The writer's daughter I had her arm broken by a fall of 30 feed down bhe embankment.—Referred to tho Streets Committeo. A Nuisance.—Cr. Glover presented a petition signed by Mr C. M. Carter, headmaster of the Napier-Btreeb School, complaining of a nuisance alongside that school; —Referred bo Sbreebs Commibbee. Tender for Lime, etc.—Mr J. J: Craig applied bhab hia tender for lime, sand, etc., should be accepted.—Cr. Farrell moved, and Cr. Julian seconded, "That Mr Craig's tender be accepted."—Mr Grey moved as an amendment, " Thab fresh tendors be called."—Mr Craig's tender was accepted. Fireworks Display. — Permission was granted to Mr W. 11. Hazard to hold a pyrotechnic display on the nights of the 26th and 29th instants and lsb prox., in a vacanb allotment near Quay-street. Tenders for Printing.—The tender of W. McCullough was accepted for printing, for the Council. Library and Art Gallery.—On the motion of Cr. Hewson ib was resolved, "That the Art Gallery and Free Public Library be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and the let and 2nd cf January. Dog Tax.—Cr. Garratt moved: "That... the dog tax for the year 1894, be se.' —It was resolved thab the dog tax remain at 10s.
