CITY COUNCIL SALARIES.
ALLOCATION LAST NIGHT.
INCREASE OF £183.
The question of voting the salaries of tho Auckland City Council officials came up at bhe Ciby Council meeting last evening, tha work of fixing bhe salaries for bhe year occupying aboub an hour of bhe meebing. The firsb ibem on the list was tho Mayor* honorarium, £200. This was at once agreed Cr. Thornes moved that the salary of the Town Clerk be increased from £400 to £450. . Cr. Wright strongly opposed any increase in salaries of officials. He said that the Council was £4,189 14s 6d worse off bhan it was two years ago, and that the Council's debib balance now ebood ab £22,647 odd. While bhis was so, he would Bbrongly op. pose any increase in salaries. Several obher Councillors also condemned bhe proposal bo increase bhe Town Clerk's or any other official's .alary. Cr. Thome's proposition was lost. Cr. Glover moved " That the question of salaries be referred to a special Committee." , The Mayor pointed out that the salaries must be voted at that meeting. It was resolved " Thab bhe Town Clerk'fl salary remain as before, £400." The resb of bhe officials' salaries were allocabed as follows :—City treasurer, £250; rate collector, £200; assistant rate collector, £150; ciby valuer, £200 (increase of £25); office clerk, £200; city engineer, £400 (increase of £50) ; Wesbern Springs waterworks engineer, £200; Ponsonby engineer, £150 (with residence); clerk and draughtsman, £175; clerk of works, £200; burncock, £175 (with residence) ; abattoirs inspector, £150 (with residence) ; fire brigade superintendent, £213 ; sanitary inspector, £175 ; assistant - inspector, £100; librarian, £150 (with residence); two lady assistant librarians, £75 each (increase of £25 each); fresh-water baths keeper, £100; salt-water baths keeper, £80 ; messenger, £150, with residence (increase of £20); lady atbendanb ab Art Gallery, £75 (increase of £25); superb, tendenb of parks (ex Domain ranger), £150; sexton ab Waikomibi Cemetery, £155; nighb-watchman, £2 5s per week (increase of 5s per week. A long discussion took place when the question of the ciby engineer's salary came up. Ab bhe time of bhe general reduction of salaries several years ago, this officer's salary was reduced from £600 to £350. Mr Anderson now wrote asking for an increase of his salary, pointing out thab the waterworks had now been placed in his charge. Mr Powley moved that the salary of bho city engineer be fixed at £400. Mr Alfred Kidd strongly supported bhe mobion for an increase in Mr Anderson's salary. He did nob think £400 a fear was more than their engineer was entitled to. Mr Wright opposed the increase. The division on the motion for an increase was :—Ayes: Powley, Thornes, Dignan, Hesketh, Kidd, Grey, Warren, Gar* ratt, and the Mayor (9). Againsb: Farrell, Glover, Julian, Swales, Wright, Hewson, Pabterson (7). Mr Anderson bhus gob an increase of £50 in his salary. The proposal bo increase bhe salaries of the three young ladies in the Free Library and Art Gallery also aroused some discussion. Crs. Hewson, Julian, Powley, Swales and Glover spoke in support of the proposal. JgR The motion of an increase of £25 each was carried by a large majoriby.
