TWO FEMALE LARRIKINS.
A SALUTARY SENTENCE
Thk eccentricibies of a couple of females, named respectively Estella McKegnay and Mary McKognay have been causing bho polico in Auckland considerable brouble. It was repeabedly reporbed bo bhe police bhab these two women persisted in ringing the door bell and in other ways annoying the inmates of the Salvation Army Rescue Home, in Vincent-street. The result was tbab constables for several nights wabched bhe Home, bub failed to catch bhe female larrikins. Ab lengbh, Constable Brooking was senb bo tha Home, wibh insbrucbions to remain there all night. This ruse resulted in tho bwo women being caught. They wero called ab bho Police Court this morning bo answer bhe charge of having wanbonly disburbed the inhabitants of tho Salvation Army Home, Vincent-street, by ringing tbe door bell. The women did not appear. Constable McLennan deposed to having served the summons. I Frances Shakelton deposed thab sho was in charge of bhe Home. The bwo women frequenbly rang bhe door bell. On one occasion they threw open bhe window and Bab on-the sill. They returned ab 2.30 o'clock in tho morning wibh a man, and repeabed the annoyance. After having heard corroborative evidence, the Bench —Messrs H. Rees George and J. Gilmore—fined each defendanb £2 and costs, or in defaulb one month's itnprisonmenb with hard labour. Mr F. Baume appeared on behalf of bhe defendaubs. Esbella McKegnay was furbher charged with having on anobher occasion wantonly disturbed the inhabitants of the Salvation Army Home. Defendant did nob appear. Sergeanb Gamble said those two females came bo Auckland four or five months ago, and though he did nob like being boo bard on bhe women, still he must say—and he had had considerable experience—thab a greater pair of rascals never walked the streets of Auckland. They wantonly and deliberately insulted gentlemen in the streets by asking them for money, and also ladies were insulted in bhe Park. They walked the streets the greater parb of bhe nighb and day, and alepb in an old cofl'co stall ab bhe Back of bhe markeb. He considered thab bhis was nob a caso in which any considerabion should be shown. These females were an inbolerablo nuisance, and he would ask for bhe heaviesb penalby under bhe Acb. Evidence in support of bhe charge was given by Frances Shakelton and CunBtable Brooking. Tho Benoh Inflicted a fine of £2 and costs, or one, month's hard labour in defaulb ,at the expiration cf the previous sentence.
