MISCELLANEOUS.
Our Hamilton correspondent writes: — The South Auckland Racing Club were rough on the bookmakers ab bheir meebing of Commibtee on Saturday nighb last, a resolubion having been passed bhab no bebting be allowed on their course, ond the Secretary was instructed to notify Tattersail's to thac effect. Tho resolubion was agreed to in opposition to one which was proposed bo charge each bookmaker five guineas for bhe day, bhe Commibcee being of opinion thab if open bebting were allowed at all it would bo hard to control even if a heavy fee were charged. Tho change is generally approved of by the public. Mr J. C. Booth, who has run bhe Auckland Guineas winner Tib with such success ab Sydney pony meetings, came ovor from Sydney by yesterday's steamer. Mr John Marshall's Fishfag, by Billingsgate, has produced a filly by St. Leger. Tlio two miles gallop done by Porbsea at Flemington (says the "special" of tho "Sydney Telegraph") makes his Melbourne Cup chance appear second to none. Ho had several assistants, Patron running the last mile and a half with him, and the Derby colb also acquitted himself well. Both horses are being treated to searching preparation;*, and Mr Purches is going the righb way to wind them thoroughly up). Ib can safety bo said thab nothing is doing better hero judging by their latest displays. Sydney papers say that Cremorne is very well, and, all going well, will give a good account of himself in tho big race of the year. Somo mention has been made of the largo commissions that have recently beon executed in favour of certain horses, and Mr Josephs, of the Victorian Club, anid, in an interview lasb week, bhab " bhe biggest knock I ever had, though, was in Chester's year, for I laid £10,000 against him for tho double, Derby and Cup, and £10,000 for tho Cup straight out. My book was made for Savanaka than year, and I remember the finish very vividly. I went on bhe bill wibh Joo Thompson and ' Spot' Brown to see the race, and wo had all laid Chester heavily. You know how Chester and Savanaka came away from tho other? at the finish. Well, in the excitement we slipped—ib was drizzling rain—and 3kabed to the bobbom ot tho slope, where all three brought up in a heap. *• Spot ' Brown, who was underneath and next the mud, could only gurgle, * What won ?' and when Joe Thompson said, * Chester,' Bccwiij who was sapping m*A
out of his mouth, said, with rea pathos, • Oh, don't say so.' ' No, I won b, said J.oe ironically,' bub bhe judge will. _ Thab was aboub bho hardesb knock bhe ring ever gob, bub its sbabiliby was proved ab any rate. Mr Josephs backed for the owner Winchester bo win £63,000 in the Caulfield Cup, and yet that weight of money did not make the horse a greater favourite bhan 100 bo o. Truly, bhings have changed since then. After a lengthy visib to the Old Country, Mrs James White returned to Sydney by bhe Ophir. ... Mr M. S. Laurie's brood mabron Pnscilla, by Captivator — Patch, has produced a doubtfully bred colt foal by Hotchkiss or Castor. The mare foaled to the latter s time. _ „ ~ Mr L. D. Nathan's mare Bellonna (by Nelson—Muskerina) has produced a filly foal by Sb. Leger. C. Moore, who rode Tim Swiveller in the Caulfield Cup, stated after the race thab half a mile from home be would nob have baken £1,000 to a shilling about his chance. Shaw, who was on Fortunatus (the winner s stable companion), however, was thoroughly aware of Tim's capabiliby as a finisher, and yelled out bo Moore, "Go on, Chris, keep riding him !" Tim Swiveller's lasb four or five furlongs on Saburday must have been as fast as Grace Darling's famous dash home in tho Melbourne Cup of 1885. Loyalby recenbly electrified the_ toutsab Flemington by running a mile in lmin, 47£sec.~ AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SECOND SPRING MEETING. Tho following handicaps have been declared by Mr Eyitt: — .
