END OF A CELEBRATED COMPOSER.

Paris. October 17. Obituary : Charles Gounod, the composer, aged 75. [Gounod was destined to music from hia boyhood. At the age of 18 years, he ontored tho Paris Consorvatoiro, and won ! the " great" Romo prizo in 1839, and hie subsequent mastery of stricb ecclesiastical writing formed tho basis of all his works, sacred and secular. His successful opera of "Faust" (1859) placed him at tho head of operatic composers. Other operas followed, including "Mireille" (1864), " Romeo and Juliette," " Uinq Mars" (1877), and othors. His songs, especially "Nazareth," "There is a Green Hill Far Away," and " Serenado " ("Victor Hugo "), are well known, as is also his grand oratorio of the " Redemption," written for the Birmingham foßtival in 1885.]
