MARSHALL McMAHON DEAD.

A NOTABLE CAREER,

Paris. October 17. Obituary : Marshall McMahon.

[Ex-Presidenb Marshall Marie Edmis Pabrick Maurice de McMahon was a noted French soldier, and fought on many a bloody field. Ho was born of an Irish family ab Sully, in France, in 1808. Ho was educated for the army at St. Cyr. From 1830 to 1848, Captain MaeMahon was mostly engaged in the Algerian war. He distinguished himself in the storming of Constantino. Major in 1840, and Colonel of the Foreign Legion, he wasmadeaGsnoral in the Crimean War, and succeeded General Canrobert at the head of a division. For his gallantry in storming the Malakoff, he received the G.C.L.H. and the K.G.C.B. In the Franco - Italian War he came unexpectedly upon the Austrians ab Magenta and defeated them. For this deed he was created Field Marshall and Duko of Magenta. He was made Governor of Algeria in 1864. In the Franco-Prussian war ho commanded the First Army Corps. He was forced to retreat before the Crown Prince after two preliminary babbles, and suffered a crushing defeat, after having been severely wounded at Sedan. He was Coin mander-in-Chief of the French army at Versailles, which invested Paris under the Commune. In November, 1873, Marshal MaeMahon was elected President of tho Republic for a term of seven years, bub resigned in January, 1879. He waa succeeded by M. Grfivy.
