UNEMPLOYED IN THE SOUTH

Ciiristcuurcii, Tuesday. The Hon. Mr Rooves has arranged for bwonty of tho unemployed to bo sent to Millburn rond works, Southland. At tho invitation of the Mayor, Mr Eden George, another meeting of tho unemployed was held this afternoon. About 300 men wero present. A large number wore apparently attracted by curiosity. Mr Powell roported having soon the Hon. Mr Reeves, and presented to him the resolution passed the previous day. Tho Minister, he said, had expressed his willingness to receive a deputation of genuine unemployed. After Mr George had made aD attack upon tho "Lyttelton Times," and Mr Reeves, Mr Whiting moved, "That Mr Reeven be asked to como down and meet the unemployed ab Tuam-atreeb Hall, at half-past two p.m. to-morrow, and also to meeb Mr George on the platform." In speaking to the resolution which was carried, Mr George said thab if Mr Roeves did not accopt tho invitation ho should brand him an a coward. A doputation waited on Mr Reeves in tho afternoon, and asked him to meeb all the unemployed ab the Land Board Offices to-morrow. Tho Minister promised to be present. Dosedin, Tuesday, Sinco the lat of June the names of 420 men have boon entered on the books of the local labour bureau, and ib is estimated that 150 of these are at present out of work. At the request of some of the latter, Mr Fish, M.H.R., telegraphed to the Premier expressing bhe hope that married men here would be given work before men who wero eenb down from Christchurch.
