FRANCE AND THE HEW HEBRIDES.
RUMOURED TERMINATION OF THE
DUAL CONTROL.
At tho last ordinary meeting of tho Council of tho Melbourne Chamber of Commerce a letter was read from tho Sydnoy Chamber of Commerce, inviting the attention of tho Melbourno Chamber to tho rumours of indications on tho part of the French Government to put an ond to tho dual control with England of the Now Hebrides Group, with an aggressive object, and enclosing for information of tiie Chamber copy of a lettor which had been addrossed to the Colonial Secretary of Now South Wales by the Sydney Chamber on tho subject. Tho Council doomed tho matter one of sorious moment to the Australasian colonies, and reference was made during tho discussion to othor incidents in the knowledge of tho Chamber which appeared corroborative of the apprehensions expressed by the Sydnoy Chamber. The Secretary was instructed to sond a copy of tho enclosure from Sydnoy to the Premier and also to tho press, and a i'ubcommittee of three was appointed for tho purpose of acquiring further information that might be found practicable and trustworthy, with authority to take any further action that circumstances might suggest. ______
