The Hon. R. J. Seddon (Premier) left Auckland this morning by the nine o'clock Waikato train for Hamilton, whore ho will address a public meeting to-ni^ht. He returns from Waikato to-morrow morning in order to catch the s.s. Tarawera for the South, via tho East Coast. He will be back in Wellington by Sunday morning next. At the meeting of the Mount Albert fcchool Committee last Monday it was decided to close the school in that district, because out of an average attendance of 150, only 83 children attended. Goodwin, of Hobson-streeb, was, inspected and tested yesterday by Mr A. Towssy, who said that ho considered it the best piano that he had played on for years, and equal in tone, touch and workmanship to any upright instrument made either in England*, Europe or America. The piano had been entirely designed and constructed in Auckland, beinj? what is termed an upright grand of full scale, with both European and American improvements to date, its long and heavy strings being well supported by stout wood bracings and a full iron plate. The woods used are all of Now Zealand growth, each kind being carefully selected for the peculiar qualities required of them, accousbically and otber•i7i?e. The case is Queen Anno style, with ample accommodation for holding music, etc. The workmanship has been open to inspection through its various stages.

At the City Schools Committee meeting last evenin? a circular was read by the chairman, copies of which had been received by many of the teachers, soliciting shilling subscriptions from the scholars for the purpose of croatin? a scholarship in memory of tho late Bon. J. Balance. These"had been sent by a Mr Jones.at Wellington, whose action Mr Blade 3 severely condemned. He contended if the application should have been made at all it should havo been made through either tho Board or the School Committees, certainly not through the head teacher. The schools are undenominational, unpolitical, and he hoped that neither this nor future committee would permit of turning its schools into a collecting source. He moved that it be an instruction to the head teachers not to ask for subscriptions I'rom the children for this purpose. This was seconded by Mr Farrell and spoken to by Drs. McArthur and Walker and unanimously carried.

A concert in aid of the Sacred Heart School, Ponsonby, was held last night in the Catholic Institute. There was a fairly large attendance. A capital programme was gone through the difierent items being heartily and deservedly applauded. The contributors to the programme were, Madame Tutschka, Mrs Murray, Misses Quinn, Hickson, Honan, Carriean, and Messrs Parish, Hay and Master Tutschka. The comedy, "In The Pigskin," concluded the performance. Miss Lanigan and Miss McChesney, were accompanists. An evangelistic mission will be conducted in the Wesley Hall, Karangahape Road, by Dr. Alfred H. Burton (from England) on Thursday and Friday. Consider your comfort, and purchase from Goo.
