FOOTBALL IN WAIKATO.
On Saturday the first game of the season was played in Hamilton, on Sydney Sciuare, when a scratch match camo off. Tho Hamilton Football Club were to havo played Whatawhata, but owing to somo misunderstanding the natives did nob turn up in force, only three being preseut. Sides were chosen, and two full teams turned oub. T. Clarkin and J. Gillet captained the teams, and the Selection Committee chose tho teams, putting nearly all the besb backs on one side and all the best forwards on the other. The result was a success as the game was very equal all through. The backs' team got two goals from tries and two tries or 14 points. The forwards' team scored one goal from a i try, ono from a penalty kick and two trieß-tofcal 12 points. The game being tbe first of tbe season of course could not be much of a.criterion, but I must say thab I did not like the style of play adopted. Too much holding the ball, no passing worth calling such, and no combination ah all. The only good feature of the gamo was the dribbling which was good all round. The place kicking of T. Clarkin and A. Peacock was very good indeed, although only three out of seven were converted, one being a poster and one all but so. The material is thero for a good team this season, and with practice they should do well. Nexb Saturday a match is to be played against; Whatawhata, tho following being the selected backs:-—A. Quick, J. Hill," T. Clarkin (captain), J. H. Hume, W. Hume, A. Cassidy and J. Clarkin. Forwards : A. Peacock, F. B. Kelly, E. Williamson, F. Clarkin, W. P«r. & Harrison, F. R. Seddon, and J. A. billet. Emergencies -.—Backs : C. Le Que3ne, H. Johnson, W. Wright, and W. Kelly. Forwards: G. Jack and C. Innis.—(Hamilton Correspondent.)
