A MILLIONAIRE IN TROUBLE.
£1,250 DAMAGES AWARDED,

In the action broughb by Clara Parkier aeainst Joseph Clark, a claim for £10,0 00 damages, defendant denied tbathe had any part in the woman's abduction,, but admitted that he had lenti two pounds to a man who informed him that he had taken her away. The money was merely given as an act of charity. Clark also admitted thab he had paid Mrs Parker's husband » thousand pounds in consideration of not attaching him as co-respondent to a divorce proceeding. The jury returned a verdict of £1,250 with costs. [Mrß Clara Amy Parker commenced an action in the Supreme Court at Melbourne, against Joseph Clark, the millionaire, before a jury of 12, on April 7. The court was crowded. Mr Purvis, Q.C., appeared for the defendant. The plaintiff alleged that defendant maliciously preferred a charge of forgery against her, causing her to be sent for trial and prosecuted in a criminal court, where she was acquitted. The defendant had oko charged her with perjury, which he abandoned. She claimed £10,000 damage?, including £256 for special damages. The defendant, in his defence, , said that he had reasonable cause for pre- . ferring the charges, and acted without ! malice. This case arises out of the pre- ] vious ones. The case was opened for the plaintiff by Mr Dufly in a lengthy address, , in which he assorted that on the very day Clark escaped liability by the decision of a , Judge, he Bwore no less than three informa- , tionß against Mrs Parker.]
