GOOD NEWS FROM WHANGAREI.
Ukder fcho heading of "More Trade," the " Northern Advocate " has the following in its last issuo referring to the progress and prospects of the Whangaroi district :— "The new coalfield at Ngunguru is only nino milos from Whangarei, and aa tho Victorian capitalists have decided to prosecute tho industry with vigour a good trado will at onco spring np. The road to Ngunguru is not in a good state of repair, and Mr E. Ford is urging tho Govornmont, who own a block ot land adjoining the coalliold, to spend some money on tho road, and also to throw open tho Crown land for settlement. This would bo speodily takon up if available. On overy side of Whangarei trade and progress aro very much in ovidonce. On tho east, Ngunguru is developing a now coal(iold with Victorian capital; in tho north, llikurangi is making urrnngomontH for opening up the coal measures in roadinoss for tho railway now approaching completion ; on tho west, at Maungakaramea, tho Messrs Foote Bros, aro about to orocli a- lurgo sawmill, with sufficient timber to supply a sovon years' run, while work on tho euinlields all around is activo and prices high. At Kamo, tho colliory finds omploymeno for a large number of hands, and between there and Hikurangi tho construction of tho new railway undor tho cooperative system is tho moans of providing work for sorno 150 men. Tho farmers, too, "aro gotting good prices for their stock and land is greatly inquired for on nil sides. Tho orchards also givo promise of a good crop, po that the coining summer should boa bright ono for Whangarei and district. I'rogresa is written overywhorc."
