THE LATE GALES.
SCOW MAY ASHORE.
il lik'oidd seem that the gale which was prevalent during the latter part of last week waa severely, felt up North, and wrought considerable damage. News wa3 received in town yesterday of the wreck of the scow May at Ngunguru Heads, while tryine to enter the harbour for shelter. The 'strong;, Boutji-easb gale that was blowing at . the .time drove the scow ashore on a very rocky por-; tipn of the coast,.where she nowlie3 in a badly damaged condition. The crew got safely ashore. The vessel's hold is "full of water and the sea i 3 washing through her. Several shipwrights were despatched to the scene of the wreck by Captain Gibbs in the ketch Lucy James last evening with all the necessary gear and appliances for floating her off and timber for patching her. If tho weather continues fine there is a possibility of getting her off, but should it start to blow from the eastward she will inevitably go to pieces.
The May is quite a now vessel, having only been completed at the end of this year. She was builb by Mr David Barroch, at Omaha, and was sold recently to the present owner, a half-caste, for about £600 or £700. Her tonnage is 43J, and her dimensions are : — Length, 72ft Tin ; breadth, 20ft Bjn ; and depth, 4ft lin. *"
