THE RACEHORSES OF TO-DAY.
The veteran English trainer William Day, who should be one of (ho greatest living turf authorities, wrote recently to the London " Sporting Life " on " The Racehorses of To-day," and though he firmly believes that wo have as many good horses now as we had 30 or 40 years ago, and the breed has improved rather than deteriorated, and is capable of greater improvement, says that racehorses of the present time are unequal in racing powers, wanting in stamina, and not physically as strong or a3 free from hereditary and other diseases. In support of thi9 contention he mentions — " Tattenham is the only horse which ran as many as •20 times last year, mostly over short distances, while in 1856, when heats wore in vogue, Coal Black Rose ran in 25 races, Caledonia 20, Evelyn (2 years) 20, Fisherman 34 (out of which number he won 23), Gemma di Vorgy winning 13 out of 18 (another two-year-old), Mary 26, Our Sal 24, Plausible 34, Prince of Orange 24, Stork 22, Usurer '29 and Yeutick ran in 27. winning, like the rest, more than a fair share of stakes, notwithstanding two-year-olds were allowed to run with older horses in May a mile, and nearly all the races for older horses were two, two and a-half and three miles." He • instances a host of others, amongst them being two-year-olds, running 20 races a year, and being nob one whit the worse for it in the next dV following seasons.
