BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held to-day. p re? enb: Messrs Cdy (chairman), Mobion, Muir, Luke, Grant, Buckhursb, Moab, Lennox. iiiNAjtCE.—The balances to-day are:— Education fund credib, £10,313 14s 4d; budding fund debib, £859 Is 3d; GirlsHigh School debit, £13 7s lOd. Chairman's Report.—The Chairman's reporb sbabed thab resignations had been received irorn Miss C. Harrower, assisbanb, Driving Creek ; Mrs A. S. Boulb, assistant, Te Kopuru ; Mr R. J. Hamilton, assistant, lonsonby. Appomtmenbs were aubhorised as tollovvs :-Miss A. S. Hyabb, bo Kaioara fiats; Miss _. Bah, pupil teacher, to Newton Last; Miss J. Hamilton, probationary pupil teacher, to Ponsonby • Miss F. Buckle, probationary pupil teacher, bo baresrord-sbreeb.

School Rolls.-The Board went into committee to consider a report by the iixecutive Committee relative to charges made againsb Mr D. G. Jones, head teacher ot the Te Kopuru school, by Miss Tristram, late assisbanb beacher of the school. The subjecb of coniplainb was bhab bhe school roll had been tampered with and thab remarks had been made bo scholars with reference to religion. ihei Executive Committee recommended ihab no further action be taken in the matter, butthatanyfurthercaseof alteration or erasure of school rolls be dealt wibh ; that the evidence ot Mrs Boult should be taken upon new matter contained in Miss Tristram's verbal statement bo the Committee." Mr Grant urged that ib was bhe duty of the Board to record a vote of censure in the matter.—lb was resolved "Thab the whole matter be referred back to the Executive Committee with an instruction to take Mrs Boulb's evidence."

Boaed Memeeksiiii'. — The following nominations had been made for election of three members :—Miss L. Edger, Messrs E. Bell, vy. b. Buckhurat, H. Crispe, J. L. Kelly, S.Luke, and Sir CM. O'Rorke.— It was resolved that an election tako place on the 11th March. Mr Kellv was nominated Ijy 45 Committees ; Mr" Buckhuvst by 41 ; Mr Bell, 25; Mr Luke, 11 ; Mr Crispe, 2 ; Harris, 1 ; O'Rorke, 1; Miss Edgar, 1. Some of tho (Committees nominated three instead of two candidates.

Qdjskn's College.—Some further correspondence was read upon the application made by Dr. Mc Arthur that the Queen's College should bo recognised as a school for tho education of district scholars. The Minister of Education wired that the BoarJ had power to arrange for inspection by the Board's inspectors. Dr. McArthur, who was present, said that what he wanted was that his school should bo put on exactly the same footing as the Grammar School. Ho agreed to comply with the requirements of the Act, and it was resolved to grant the request made. Miss Lilian Edger made a similar application in respect of the Ponsonby College, and it was granted on tho samo conditions as were imposed on Dr. McArthur.

Architect.—Sixteen applications were received for the position of architect in the place of Mr Allrigbb (resigned), viz., Charles Aruold, E. Bartley, W. H. Cross, S. M. Herepath, P. Holt, R. Keals and Son, F. Lou'ch, E. Mahonev and Son, Mitchell and Watt, W. H. Skinner, Jas. Slater, T. H. White, P. W. Crokcr, R. Jenkinson, R. G. Roberts, H. M. Shepherd. The list was reduced by ballot, gradually, tho final result being in favour of Messrs Mitchell and Watt. It was resolved that Messrs Mitchell and Watt be appointed for a term of six months, with the option of renewal on the part of tho Board.

Miscellaneous. —It was resolved to secure land for a school at Kuaotunu and to erect a school for 80 children there; to rent a school building at Mangawhara ; to erect a teacher's house at West RJokau. Messrs Udy and Cooper were appointed to report on application for a permanent school building in the Horseshoe Bush, Pukeatua.—lt was resolved to erect a teacher's house at Waihi, and to establish a separate school district atßuckland.

Repairs.—The Newmarket Couitnibteo forwarded an accounb of £8 2s 6d for repairs effected during tho holidays. It was resolved to draw the attention of the - Committee to a clause in tho Act forbidding payment of accounts for work dono without authority of tho Board. —Ib was agreed to adhere to a previous decision to pay two thirds cost of fencing school at Northcote.

Damages.—The Whangarei School Commibbeo raised a question as to tho liability of parents for damage done to school property by their children. Ib was agreed to obtain legal opinion on tho subject.

School Requisites.—Complaints were made re school requisites, and ib was resolved to terminate the presenb contract on March 31sb.
