CITY COUNCIL.
A SPECIAL meeting of the City Council was held last evening. There were present. Hw Worship the Mayor pressing .and Councillors Hewson, Holland, WTnghJ, Warren, Dignan, Luks, Atkin, Lever, Kidd, Paterson, Atkin, Swales, trey, C S^SS™..-Si S tenders for repairs to works at the Ponsonby pumping station were received as follows :-Geo. Frasor, £74 ss; Masefield and Co., £79 IBe; o. MoCoakrio and Son, £68 W . (accepted). Beaney and Sons, £90 10s; (J. Hawkeswood, £115 3s 6d ; A. and G. Grice, iol 4s. ACCOUNTS. - Aocounte amounting to £0 463 103 Bd, recommended by t.ie Finance Committee, were passed for payment, including £5,000, the half-yeaily interest.-The Mayor ebatott thati theexpendituro authorised included £10, wnicn he had taken upon himself, according to precedont. in sending a cablegram oi condolence to the Prince and Princess of Wales in their bereavement. Gorse in Pohsokbv.—The Mayor s.ateri that he had authorised an expenditure oi £15 0s 6d, for clearing away gorse in Ponsonby, at the urgent request of residents, who were afraid of fire caused, me Finance Committee, however, recommended that in future expenditure of this description should bo borne by residents, so tar as the law inado them liable. Waterworks Conservation Fctnd.--Tho Mayor stated that the Council had a waterworks conservation fund amounting to £3,150, and he moved, "That the repairs now authorised at the Ponsonby pumping station be a charge against this fund."-Councillor Hewson .was under the impression that the conservation fund was 'intended for any serious break-down or duplication of machinery.-! Cr. Dienan thought the present expenditure should come oub of the ordinary revenue. Nothing had been added to the conservation fund for some years, and he thought it undesirable to break into the fund for such a small Fum.-Cr. Atkin did not believe the conservation fund was intended to meet wear and tear. They did not know what might happen in the near future, and seeing that they made a big profit out of Hie water they should, he thought, pay for wear and tear out of the general revenue. — Cr. Patarson thought that as the fund had accumulated to its present extent it was right to use tho money for the repair of wornout machinery.—TheMayor said this money was lying in the bank at 5 per cent., and he thought it could be put to better use. As Councillors thought this was good enough, he withdrew his motion. Cheques. —Cr. Dignan was authorised to sign cheques in the absence of Cr. Trenwith.
Paintixg.—The Mayor stated that it would be necessary to paint the fences at the Albert Park,' Western Park and city reserves. —Or. GarraCt said he intended to oppose any green paint work, a combination of tar and oil being much more serviceable. —Cr. Lever .proposed that the matter be deferred for two months, and this was agreed to. Onslow Park.—A letter from Richard Madden suggested that as a compliment to the departing Governor, the Domain should be re-chnstened Onslow Park.—Tho Mayor said he agreed with the suggestion, and proposed that the letter be referred to the Domain Committee.—Cr. Cooper seconded the motion.—Cr. Atkin said the Council had no po%ver to change the name of the Domain, which was fixed by Act of Parliament. —The motion was carried. This concluded the business.
