NEW ZEALAND ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
About three or four hundred spectators gathered together in the Domain lost evening to witness the test races amongst members of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club, to enable an Auckland team to he selected for the approaching Championship Meeting to bo held at Lancaster Park, 'Christchuroh, on the sth and 6th February. Messrs J. Halyday, jun., A. H. Cotter, Jas. Coatos, R. Barrett, B. Esam, J. Cooper, and other members of the Auckland Club superintended the contests. The display of form wus disappointing throughout, and it was evident that some of the competitors did not care to extend themselves. In all of the tests the times wore slow. For the Half-milo H. J. Bull and T. Roberts competed, H. Burton noting as pace-maker. Koberta had no chance with his companion, and Bull won easily, but it was the general opinion the winner could have done much fastsr time. Tho first quarter of t»he journey waa done in excellent time.
Messrs P. J. HackeAb and E. T. Laurie opposed each other in the High Jump. The h'rsb-namod put up sfb 44in.
For the 12yds Hurdles, R. B. Lusk, who is not ab liia best, started, the other competitors being P. J. Hackecfe, W. H. Marbin and T. Roberts. Lnak was quickest over the first obstacle, and was never headed, the display of the other men nob being up to championship torm. Margin finished second, and' Haclretfc third. One or two of the competitors expressed themselvos diseatisfiod, so the Gommittee intend giving them another chance this afternoon to prove their private form. The 100 yds and 250yda were run in the one ovenfc. Mes3re J. H. Buchanan and J. C. Hutchison were the only contestants. For about the first 100 yds Buchanan led easily, when he Blackened hia pace and Hutchison drew level. The latter was the first to pass the post, bub ib was the general opinion Buchanan could easily have beaten his opponent. Ifc is stated the connections of Buchanan are confident of him beating Hempton in both the 100 yds and 250yd9 championships. A. F. Burton won the three-mile walk, going in fine style. H. J. Bull and W. S. Farquhar opposed each other in the mile teat, and a splendid finish home ended in Farquhar winning by halfayard. Burton acted as pace-maker. This evening the tests will be- continued. To-night the Committee meet to select the representatives. If R. B. Lusk can get away, no doubt he will be picked for the hurdle events. The other members of the team will probably comprise : —100 yards, 250 yards, and quarter of a mile events, Buchanan and Hutchison ; walking evente, Burton ; jumps, Upfill ; half-mile, one mile and three miles, Bull.
