OUR VOLUNTEERS.

RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.

Last night a meeting of the local members of the New Zealand Rifle Association (convened by Captain Kohn) was held in the Drill-shed. The principal business was to appoint a local secretary to replace Mr J. F. Haultain, who has acted in that capacity for some years. Mr M. McCallum proposed and Mr J. Parslow seconded that Captain Kohn be appointed. This was carried. The question of the locality of the next N.Z.It.A. annual shooting meeting was discussed at some length, and it was decided to leave no stone unturned to get the meeting held in Auckland. A sub-commibtee consisting of Captains Gooper and Kohn, Sergeant ■ Parelow, P. O. Spinley and Gunner McCallum were appointed to look out suitable range sites and report to Major Sommerville, Chairman of Council. ENGINEERS' PARADE. About thirty membera of the Engineers met for an undress parade, held last night in the Drill-shed. Major Anderson was in command. A useful course of drill was gone through. JNELSON VOLUNTEERS. Last evening the Hon. Mr Seddon inspected the Nelson volunteers at their monthly parade, and complimented them highly. He said the country must rely on the volunteers mainly for its protection, and that it has been resolved by the Government to continue for three years the present rate of capitation, which was low enough. Ib was contemplated to have but two camps next Easter, one for each Island, but to mass volunteers at each of the four defended ports, and organise manoeuvres in which vessels of the Auxiliary Squadron might take part. So far as the Wesb Coasb of the South Island was concerned, as Nelson was midway between Marlborough and the West Coast, he thought ib would be a convenient position for a camp, as a war vessel might also take part, but he would consult Major Bonar and other officers before a decision was arrived at.
