ENGLISH FLAX MARKET.
Tho following is Spurling's New Zealand hemp market report, dated London May 15tn: —.Despite tho trifling supplies ot New Zealand hemn brought forward at auction since my ;a3t ndvicOßOf 18th ult,. our market since has not only been very o.uiet, but prices throughout the month have shown a drooping tendency, and with the exception of common and middling Qualities, most descriptions show a decline of 20s to 303 per ton on the rates of last month. Except for the stringency of our money market precluding speculation, and the increased dulnoss and fall in the value of Manila hemp, it would be difficult to T?si"n any satisfactory reason for tho recent decline itt'New Zealand, the more so as our spot stocks are small, aud arrivals very moderate. These latter comprise the Naman, Northbrook toraiici Brablook. Pakeha, with a total of 3 659 bales of hemp, of which 1,599 bales are for transshipment to the United States. Now that the vahio of New Zealand hemp for ropemaking purposes is coming to. be better "naerstood and appreciated here, it is to be hoped that tho finer qualities will also bo better •vnnreciated than of late in our English markets, o?a cessation of these shipments to this country will ™° st Pi-otaWy take place, and thus drive into the hands of our Transatlantic opponents supplies that may ultimately be required hrro Our supplies at public sale since 18th ufto have been only 2.550. bales of which liarelv half have been disposed of, comSi amongst others the following p ,1-J ?■- Rnnd to Fine :O in diamond, £23; k R i? l23los°'Nß ? £22 10s: GB. £21; JH, £21. %a 14-Orona, £21; Glen, £21.
