DEVONPORT.

The usual meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening, Mr E. W. Alison (Mayor) presiding. A small amount of routine business regarding repairs to footpaths, roads, etc., was transacted, and the Council rose after a short sitting. J Postal Charges.—ln accordance with notice given the Mayor moved " That the member for Waitemata, Mr - Jackson Palmer, be requested to interview the Postmaster-General with the object of having the present excessive postal rates from Auckland bo Devonport reduced from 2d to Id, and also to endeavour to effect some diminution in the excessive charges for telephone messages between tho borough and Auckland."—Mr Alison spoke strongly in favour of his motion, as did several other Councillors, all agreeing that 2d was an exorbitant charge for postage for such a short distance.—The motion was carried unanimously.
