BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held this afternoon, when tbo following members wore present :—Messrs Udy (Chairman), Grant, Moat, Muuy Motion, Leunox. Balances. —The balances to-day ire : Education Fund credit, £8,995 5s |6d ; Girls' High School credit, £7 2s 9d.

• Quarterly Returns.—The quarterly statistics made up on March 31 showed -that the number of schools, including- 30 half time schools, was 266, the eatne number as last year; total number of teachers 599, being an increase of 7 ; sewing teachers 57, increase, 3; scholars on roll, 22,853, increase of 474; average attendance, 15,574 ; increase 339. Chairman's Report.—The Chairman's report stated that tenders had been called for school at Whakatane, and for teacher's dwelling at Papakura Valley. The S following resignations have been received : From Mr Thos. J. Robinson, probationary pupil teacher, Albert-street school: Miss M. C. Tristam, teacher in 'charge of Pvaglan school; Mr 3 Bennett, sewing teacher, Puriri.

Tender.—The tenderof Cruickshankand Vipond, £137. for removing school 'and teacher's dwelling at Tauhoa, was accepted. New Schools.—Applications for establishment of schools at Mahurangi Heads Paungakawa (Bay of Plenty), and Wai■wera, were deferred for further information. It was agreed to enlarge Huntly school, a similar application re Paparata school being deferred for Mr Motion's report.

Technical Education.—The Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce wrote asking if the Board intend to take any action the view of introducing technical education in their schoels. It was to reply -forwarding a statement of what had been done in the past.
