The two miles was done in 2 minutes 24 seconds, Cox leaving Burton eight yards behind, and Peace third, with Macdonald last, 50 yards behind Peace. At 2_ miles Burton went to the front, being closely pressed by Cox, and a great race ensued for the last quarter of a mile. and the Auckland man won by a final spurt amidst great cheering, by 15 yards; Cox. second ; Piace, 200 yards away, third ; Macdonald, fourth.
