Salaries on the "Times."
The contributors bo the " Times " are, according to a writer in this month's " Ladies' Treasury," more handsomely paid than those of any obher paper. No leader-writer has less bhan £1,0-o.per annum ; bub bhen it musb be remembered thab these writers arc tied down to contribute to the " Times " alone ; they may not even contribute to magazines or quarterlies, though bhey are allowed to write books. The correspondence budget in salaries alone amounts to nearly £50,000 a year. M. de Blowitz, the Paris correspondent of the paper, ia- paid £3,200 per annum ; Mr Lowe, ab Berlin, has £2,500; the Vienna correspondenb bhe same; bhe correspondenb ab Rome £2,000, with rent of a residence ; Mr Simpson, ab St. Petersburg, the same. Even the lesser correspondents who do not wire perhaps a dozen or half-a-dozen columns in the course of a twelvemonth, are paid on scales varying from £1,000 to Senor Diaz, at Madrid, down to £500 to Herr Julius Lax, who represents the journal in Brussels ; and so on to thcminimum of £250 paid to Mr Heinrich ab Christiana; this latter sum seems small, but seeing that the correspondence wired or wribben to Printing House Square occurs only, as a rule, about fifteen times a year, the'eorrespondenb is fairly well paid for his work ab bhe rabe of nearly £17 per message. Mr Fuller-Maibland, the musical critic of the " Times," gets a salary of £450 a year, and an allowance of 7s 6d for each concert he attends.
