THE DUKE OF SUTHERLAND.

As surmised yesterday, the large fourmasted steamer which was reported on the Coast North yesterday morning, proved to to be the Duke of Sutherland, one of the New Zealand Shipping Company's line of cargo steamers acquired for the frozen meat trade. She arrived in port about 6.30 p.m., being from East London (Cape) direct in ballast to part-load here. Pilot Sainty brought her into port. Off Judge's Bay the Harbour-Master (Captain Burgess), the Customs officers, and Mr O. V. Houghton (local manager New Zealand Shipping Company), boarded her from the steam launch Despatch, Captain Burgees then berthed her eafely at the Kaihvuy Wharf,

The Duke of Sutherland is 3,116 tons register, built of steel. She was here on her maiden trip to New Zealand in April of last year. Captain Ball still commands her, and has with him as chief officer, Mr Nash ; second, Mr Topp ; third, Mr Clements : surgeon, Dr. Finejjan ; chief engineer, Mr Neill. The steamer is fitted up with very complete refrigerating apparatus, and can stow away an immense quantity of frozen meat, besides having cool space for fruit and dairy produce.

She left London on November 15th last, with a mixed cargo for South Africa, and called at Teneriffc, Capetown, Simon's Town, Port Elizabeth, and East London. Ou the 29th ulfc. she left the latter port for Auckland direct in ballast, cud had a moderate - weather passage across the Southern Ocean. The Duke ships here some 6,500 carcases frozen beef and mutton, 130 tons kavri gum, and some wool and sundries. She began taking- in cargo at the Railway Wharf this morning, and she ia expected to get away for the South on Saturday morning. She goes hence to Gisborne, Napier, and Wellington to fill up for London.
