How a Tuio or Bright Maidests Worsted
a Presumptuous Masher.
'I HA.D the rare pleasure of seeing a presumptuous dude pub to routo yesterday afternoon on a South Side grip-car,' re. marked General Cunningham, of Indiana, a b the Palmer Houso,to a 'Chicago Posb' reporter. ' I myself wa3 on the car with one or two others, and ab Thirby-fifth etreeb bhree pretty little feminine buds, each of about fourteen or fifteen summers, gob in, rovereing the fronb seat, so tluvt they sab faco bo face. ' This left a vacant scab, but one which, while anothor seat remained, few men would have thought) of taking. The charming little trio, dressed in bho purest of whibe gowns, to which was given a dash of colour by small roses pinned on their breasts, were evidently oub for a lark and thoir tongues flew liko birds before the storm. 'As they wore enjoying themselves _to their übmosb testifying to tho enlivening spirib of their talk by their bursts of musical laughter, a nattily-attired dude about 25 years old hailed the driver with his cane, and getting on at tho tail-end worked his way up to the trio and plunked himself down into the vacant soab. 'He had passed two empty ones, bub neither was what ho wan tod. Hβ was a stranger to bhe girls, and his presence froze tbom for a moment. Their fun was apparently spoiled, but he did not mind that, In fact by the way he straighbened oub bhe kinks in his spine and smiled ab the trio he evidently thought he was honouring them. • I was tempted to givo him a pointer, but the actions of one of the girls told me to wait. She at whom he was staring returned his stare. She took him in from top to toe, thon bending forward whispered in the ear of the girl facing her. She in turn communicated to the one besido her, whereat all three broke into laughter. ' Then another took an ocular inventory of the chap and whispered to her friend, upon which out poured another flood of merriment. ' The dude took the first with a look of profound astonishment; the second with abject dismay ; a third, which immediately followed, with terror ; but as the three pretty heads went togebhor for .1 fourth time ha feigned to sao some one on the sidewalk he desired to speak with, and without waiting for the driver to slow up he jumped off, followed by the laughter of every man on the grip.'
