BUTCHERS' UNION.

A SLIGHT TRADE DIFFICULTY,

A meeting of the Butchers' Union .was held last evening in the Foresters' Hall, Newton. There was a good attendance, the chair_ being occupied by Mr Collins, Vice-president. A considerable amount of the usual routine business was transacted. ' The secretary mentioned that objection . had been made to a number of butchers' carters being members ot the Butchers' Union and also of the Carters' Union. After a little discussion it was decided that these men should be allowed to remain in both unione till the 28th October. Ifc is intended by all the labour organisations in Auckland to make next 28th October a " big day," and last evening the Batchers , Union decided to hold their sporfce dn a larger scale than usual. A canvassing and sports committee was appointed, conelating of the office-bearers of the Union with power to add to their number. A trade matter which caused some considerable discussion was the attempt of the employers to make the men work till 10 e'clock on Saturday, nights. It was stated that originally the men askea for a halfholiday on Wednesday, but agreed to forego that privilege on condition that they were allowed off work pfc 8 o'clock on Saturday nights. Now tho employers want to close At tett o'clock. It was decided that no overtime should be taken for work on Saturday nights; that the men should leave at 8 o'clock on Saturday nights, or 6lse should have their half-holiday on Wednesdays. The Whitcombe and Tombs dispute at Chrietchurch was referred to, and the Secretary mentioned that all tho Unione in * the colony might be asked to take part.
