POULTRY SHOW.

« GOOD EXHIBITS. The annual Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary i Show was opened to-day at the Agricultural Hall or Columbia Rink. All this morning the judges were engaged in selecting the birda most worthy of prizes, and a hard task they had on account of the pood class of exhibits. The present Show compares very favourably with previous ones in the class of birds exhibited. The number, too, ii greater than usual, except in pigeons and canaries. Several new exhibitors are to the fore, and their birds add interest to the collection , . Competition ia on the whole becoming keener every year, and .nowadays competitors have to send in really good birds to havo a chance of obtaining a prize. The judges say that some of the exhibits this year would have a good chance of obtaining prizes at the Crystal Palace Exhibition, and euch praise coming from experienced men is worth a deal. These shows are of great value in rousing public interesb in the breeding of good fowJs and in leading all poultry owners to in vest in the best kinds. Certiiinly if everybody who keeps fowls visite this present Show, there should follow a gr«ab improvement in the class of birds kept. It is nob as if these birds were good for show only ; the beet birds are the best layers and the best for eating. ■ The Show was opened to the public at noon to-day, but it was not till this afternoon when market business was done that people began to attend in numbers It will be open this evening and to-morrow. The show of game birds is very good, and the exhibits include some really fine birds. Mr Holmea's black-breasted red game cocks are particularly good. The display of Cochins is one of the beab ever made in Auckland, and it is really a treat' to look on the fins birda. Mr Hey wood in the adult class, Colonel Daweon in tne young class, and Mr W. S. Buckland in Partridge Cochins exhibit some splendid specimens. In Dark Brahmas, adul* clase, there is close competition between Mr A. Bluck and Reid Bros., the exhibits being very good. Mr Towler shows some fine young birds. Mr Clow is again to the fore with his Light Brahmas, Mr Cunningham an exhibitor, running him pretty close. Mrs Kennedy, of Waiheke, is the only exhibitor of Langshangs; but the birds are good. The largest number of Plymouth Rocks ever exhibited in Auckland are to be seen jthis time; and the show is most creditable. Mr Phillips comes off best in adult cocks, with Mr Grosham in close attendance; while Mre Hyde shows the best hen. Mr Phillips also shows eorae excellent young birds. In white Plymouths Mr Gresham ia the only exhibitor. In Wyandotfces Mr A. Bluck, who&e fowls are always good, this year is again well to the fore. Mr Mildenhal, and Mr and Mise Hazard also show some fine birds. In the cockerel and pullet claes there are ]5 exhibits, and Mr Hazard turns the tablos on Mr Bluck. In white adult birde Mr Raynes, of Dargaville, is the only exhibitor, but in the young clase Mr Bluck has a couple of beautios. The show of Spanish is small, and all but one, a tine adult cock bird belonging to Mr P. Smith, are exhibited by Mr Lowe. Dr. Parkinson is the only exhibitor of Andalueian adult cocks, and takes first place for hie young birds, while Mr Emory is first in the adult hon class. Dr. Parkinson is also the chief exhibitor of Minorca;, In Golden-spangled Hamburgs Mr Heywood'e birds are very fine. Mr Wynyard's young birds are good; and in hene Mr . Grainger shows four fine imported birds. The Silverspangled Class ie not well filled. Mr Bagnail exhibits all the Redcaps, and Mr f. A. White all bbc Polands, The birds in both classes are good, though, not numerous. In White Leghorns Messrs Strong and Grey hare the beet exhibits. In Bantams there is good variety ; but the class is not very well filled. Aβ unual, there are plenty of birds in the Selling: Class, Ducks ere not numerous, but there are some very good ones. There is a fine show of bronze turkeys by Meeare Aitken and Grainger. One bird ehown by Mr Aibken is very large. In pigeons and canaries, ac mentioned above, the entries ace not numerous, but the variety ie great. Several other cage birds are shown. Ceneiderabie interest is being shown in the art union drawing of birds, which takes place after the Show. Besides the large list of patrons of the Association, of whom His Worship the Mayor ie one, the Show ie being conducted by the following officers .-—President), A. H.
