ONEHUNGA WHARF DIFFICULTY.

WAIUKU GRIEVANCES,

The reply of Mr McKerrow to the influential deputation thatwaited upon him, (says our Onehunga correspondent) is anything but satisfactory. To wait for ten days before an answer can be given may seem but a small matter to men of Mr McKerrow's class, whose thirty sovereigns find their way into their pockets every seventh day ; but to struggling settlers, whose very existence depends upon the earning of as many shillings, it is another matter. I had a conversation with a Waiuku storekeeper yesterday. He told me he sends a very large quantity of butter, eggs, and poultry to shopkeepers. An Onehunga carter used to receive it, and deliver it to the various shops, and then collect the empty packages and place them on board the Waiuku boat, but now he has to come from Waiuku himself, proceed to Auckland, and thus escape the extra charges, for he told me it was much cheaper to book direct to Auckland than to Onehunga under the new rules. If. this is so, then it must be. a great injustice to the storekeepers of Onehunga, who receive a bi-weekly supply of dairy produce from email settlements, and it will be a severe blow to these settlements, such as Pollock, Awhitu, etc., if such an unreasonable charge as 9d per package and a poll tax of 2d be levied upon poultry. There are two sides to every question, as Mr McKerrow said yesterday, and he must surely know. It is not his side, but the other side, that needs not only his and Mr Maxwell's re-consideration, but prompt action in removing an unjust and uncalledfor slice of tyranny.
