THE ARAWATA IN A GALE.
The Fiji steamer Arawata, which arrived from Suva to-day, had on her last trip from Auckland down to Suva a_long and very stormy passage. In a heavy gale which came on when near Fiji the steamer was hove-to for twenty-four hours, and a lob of the live stock on board were lost. Two out of six horses on board, belonging to Sir John Thurston, Governor of Fiji, who was a passenger, were killed, and the remainder much knocked about. They would all have been loeb bub for the exertions of the carpenter and the chief officer, Mr Jocelyn. The latter took a sheep into his cabin in order to save ib. The gale which the steamer encountered was probably the outer portion of a heavy cyclone, which must have passed very close to Fiji, for the Arawata was only 230 miles south of Suva when it came on with such force as to compel Captain Smith to put the ship's head to the wind. Fiji appears, however, to have escaped, for the hurricane was nob felt on shore.
