An extraordinary vacancy having occurred in the Avondale Road Board, Mr Thomas Garrett, junr., being the only candidate this day nominated to fill the same, the Returning Officer (Mr Seaman) declared that gentleman duly elected.
Mr.C. L": Garland, member for Carcoar, N.S.W., writing from London under date 23rd August to Mr Witheford, says ■:—" I quite endorse your able letter to the New Zealand Government. It would _be far better to employ men in developing, ihe gold mines, and thus prosecuting work that would prove reproductive, than to employ them on unproductive work as heretofore."
Harry Devere's Comedy Company again appear at Abbott's Opera House this evening. The programme will include those clever bicyclists the Kingsley Brothers, whose marvellous exhibitions are well worth seeing. Mr Dan Tracy will again display his skillful manipulation of pedal extremities as the champion dancer as well as a comic Irishman. Mis 3 Lena Levy, Mr Charles Ward and Mr Higgins, the strong man, will also contribute towards the evening's entertainment.
This afternoon Mr Fergus inspected the work being done ab the Government House and grounds, and was engaged a part of the time receiving a number of gentlemen on private or semi-privabe business. No further definite engagements will be made until Mr Fergus can have a consultation with Major-General Edwarda aB to the labter'a plans')as/all future arrangements will depend op these.
