PARNELL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. There were present: The Mayor (H. B. Scaly), in the chair, Crs. Gay, Savage, Gilmour, Auger. Thomaß, Coleman, McConnell, MoCabe, and Lyell. Water Supply. — The Town Clerk of Aucklatfdforwarßed the usual deed of agreement for water supply for three, years, on the saifie conditions as previously stated. Abolishing the Totalisator.—A letter •was received from the Chrisfcchurch lown Clerk asking the Parnell Borough's cooperation in abolishing the totalisator, and forwardpd a petition and report which ib is intended to send to Parliament.—On the motion of Crs* Gay and Gilmour. the letter ■was received. - J' A Mortgagee's Protest.^The Secretary Ml ithe I-dust. ial and Prof idertt Permanent Building' and Investment Society wrote calling attention fco the amount of rates, .expenses &c, that have been allowed fco accumulate against a property of which the Society is first mortgagee. Municipal Gas BiLl.—The Town Clerk of the ChristchUtch City Council wrote inibtming thfe Bb_BUgh that they intended duribg th 6 ensuiiig Session of Parliament to introduce „a lodal Bill to f Ope&l that part of section 36_ of the M.C. Afct, 1886, which prevents municipalities from erecting their oWn gasworks where they already exists and that the monopoly in Christchurch had proved SO grievous that it had been determined by the ratepayers to erect corporation gasworks.—Cr. Savage said he had suffered considerably from the local Gas Company, and was in sympathy with the Christohurch people.—Cr.JGilmour x^ropasfed,: ahd Or. Coleman seconded,."That bhe letter be received, and thab Mr Moss, M.H.R. for Parnell, be asked to help the Bill through Parliament."—Carried. Auckland Gas Company's New Bill.— E. B. Parsons, Secretary of Gas Company, forwarded copy of the Auckland Gas Company's Bill Which bhe Company intend to introduce at the e_suing_ session of Parliament. It was decided to defer the matter till next meeting. Foreman op Works' Report was read and showed that the sewer in Portlandstreet had been opened up and new pipes put in. The Bishop's fence had bfeen reerected. Smaller metal was being put on the road. The foreman recommended the purchase of the iron roller he had been using.—lt was agreed that the Streets Committee inspect the roller with power to buy ; also decided chat the New Zealand IhßurahCe Company be requested to place their ladder on the outside of the Bishop's tence instead of inside.

Streets Committee Report.—The Committee reported to having ihspected the road being formed by the trustees of St. Stephen's School; and they(l)recommended that the Council lay 1£ chains of 9-inch drain pipes; to also build a cesspit not to co3b more than £6. — The drain' will run into the present drain, and will 'prevent the road being cut up when finished. (2) That the Council cut down the top of the hill to meet the new road ; also to put scoria on the road near the Orphan Home gate belonging to the Council. — Report was adopted. Accounts.—Accounts to the amount of £46 10s 8d were passed for payment. Extension of Manukau Road.—Cr. Gay proposed, " Thab the Council communicate with tbe Auckland Harbour Bokrd re tho extension of Manukau Road across Mechanics' Bay." — Seconded by Cr. Savage, who showed the benefits to be derived therefrom by the Parnell people.— Carried.

General Rats.— Cf. Savage proposed, "That the Council of Parnell do hereby make and levy a general rate for the general purposes of the borough of one shilling in the pound upon the annual value of all rateable property in the said borough, for the period of one year, commencing on the Ist day of July, 1889. Such rate to be made payable in one sum on the Ist day of Jiily, 1889."—The motion was seconded by Cr. Gilmour and carried.
