BOOT OPERATIVES' STRIKE.
TROUBLE WITH TOOMER
BROTHERS.
(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Christchubch, this day. A large meeting of bootmakers' operatives decided that in consequence of Toomer Brothers refusing to employ members of the Union any longer, the men locked out should go out on strike, at federation pay, and that Toomer Bros, be notified that their action having brought this about, they be compelled to pay all expenses of the "strike. The meeting was very unanimous in condemning the action of Toomer Bros, in taking the opportunity afforded by Lightband, Allen, and Co. closing their works. The bootmakers' strike has not exactly commenced yet, as parleying is going on between Toomer Bros, and the men. The latter seem inclined to waver a little, though they declare they are determined to resist.
An employers' deputation waited upon the Industrial Protection League, and stated the case was one for compromise. They expressed sympathy with the men, and regretted the attitude assumed by Messrs Toomer.
